Current Students
My name is Adam Creitz and I am a senior studying Geography with a German Minor. In the summer of 2022, I took an intensive German course in Dresden, Saxony DE at the Technische Universität of Dresden with my brother. It was an experience of a lifetime immersing myself in the German language and exploring the rich culture of the region. Some things I did in Saxony were going to the Germany-Poland Border in Görlitz and learned about the Silesia region's history, went to different DDR historical sites like a monument to the Trümmerfrauen, and took a walking tour of Leipzig (with the help of the 9-Euro ticket to get me there). Outside of Saxony, my favorite place was Berlin where I explored the diverse neighborhoods. I love learning about German politics as a human geographer, and to my delight there was a mayoral election in Dresden the day I got there so I enjoyed seeing all the political signs around the town. Here I am in this picture in Berlin at the Brandenburg Gate.

Past Students
My name is Gretchen Gutenberger and I am a junior studying Chemical Engineering with a minor in German Studies. Last Spring 2019, I studied abroad in Dortmund, Germany through the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP). Studying abroad was one of the best decisions I’ve made and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their language, intercultural, and personal skills. Technische Universität Dortmund, my university, gave all exchange students a free train pass for the entire Bundesland so during my 5 months in Dortmund, I made lots of excursions within Nord Rhine-Westphalia, including several trips to Köln aka Cologne (see picture). My other favorite place to travel to was Copenhagen, Denmark. German is a beautiful language, which is something I truly experienced for the first time while in Dortmund. The joy of piecing together meaning from a long compound word (Mitfahrgelegenheit anyone?) and the frustration that comes from a missed separable prefix combine to create a wonderful mental challenge where the reward is human connection.

Majors: Anthropology and German
Studied abroad: Martin-Luther Universität, Halle (Saale), Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany Favorite German word: Schweinhund Interests: I’m currently working on a paper dealing with current German identity politics and how the German execution of the “other” ties in to the larger European populist narrative. I also enjoy reading, spending far too much time in museums, and of course some good German bread! |
