Saturday, October 19, 2019 - 9:30am-2pm
Montana State University - Leon Johnson Rm 346
This workshop will address how German is not just a native language in Europe but also here in our state. Indeed, the rich diversity of German-speaking communities in Montana is something that has been too often overlooked and under-appreciated at the secondary and higher educational levels. By looking “in” to our local heritage speakers and not just towards Germany, Austria, Switzerland, or other German-speaking communities elsewhere in the world, this workshop brings a different kind of state-wide visibility to the vitality of the German language as such, and also ongoing value of teaching it in our schools.
Educator participants will explore avenues for incorporating regional Hutterite realia and traditions into our teaching as well as models of Intercultural Communication assessment which can be integrated directly into the new activities our students have been practicing.
Student participants will engage in a series of intercultural communication activities that range from learning new vocabulary about local produce to immersively producing a meal in the Hutterite tradition.
